Seit wann fotografierst du?
I started making short films in high school on video. From there I went to film school, where I began hanging out with photography students, who happened to be in the same building as the film school. That was 2004.
Angefangen zu filmen habe ich in meiner Schulzeit. Nach meinem Schulabschluss habe ich Film und Television studiert. Während meines Studiums habe ich auch Fotografieren gelernt, da die Fotografiestudenten im selben Gebäude waren. Das war 2004.
Hast du dein erstes Bild noch?
I can’t actually remember the very first photo I took. It was probably a family photo or something like that.
Leider kann ich mich nicht mehr an mein erstes Foto erinnern. Ganz bestimmt war es ein Familienfoto.
Was sind deine Lieblingsmotive, eher Menschen oder Architektur? Lieber schwarz/weiss oder Farbe und warum?
I definitely prefer to take photos of people. Portraits are my favourite. I take a mixture of natural and “staged” portraits. I prefer to find interesting people on the street and just ask to take a photo. Although I’m finding this is getting harder. People are becoming more suspicious towards people with cameras. Most of my photos are in colour. We live in a colourful world, so I find colour works in most situations. That being said, black and white is timeless, and powerful in the right situations.
Am liebsten fotografiere ich Leute. Portraits mache ich am liebsten – eine Mischung aus spontanen und dramaturgischen Fotos. Ich liebe es interessante Leute auf der Strasse zu fragen ob ich ein Foto von ihnen machen kann. Leider wird das immer schwieriger. In der heutigen Zeit sind die Leute sehr vorsichtig geworden. Die meisten meiner Fotos sind in Farbe, da wir in einer bunten Welt leben. Aber Schwarz/Weiss Fotos sind zeitlos und haben eine starke Austrahlung in der richtigen Situation.
Was hältst von Instagram?
I tried Instagram for a few months, but it wasn’t for me. Seemed to me it was just a platform for people to do this weird follow/unfollow thing… not so much for supporting artists. Also found a lot of fake accounts and “bought” likes. I did meet some good, talented people on there, but on the whole, I found it to be a waste of time.
Auf Instagram war ich nur für ein paar Monate. Es gab viele Fake Kontos und “gekaufte likes”. Es sind auch viele talentierte Leute auf Instagram, aber im Grossen und Ganzen war Instagram für mich eine Zeitverschwendung.
Was sind deine Vorbilder, sofern du welche hast?
Steve McCurry, Wolfgang Tillmans, Miron Zownir, Sally Mann, Tim Hetherington. There are many. I also discovered Sven Marquardt when I first moved to Berlin in 2013.

Was ist dein Lieblingsblog oder Webseite zum Thema Fotografie?
I have found Lensculture quite useful. They also run competitions, workshops and features on some of the best photographers in the world. Also Magnum Photos is amazing to see some of the best work in the world.
Ich finde Lensculture gut. Sie machen Wettbewerbe, Workshops, und Ausstellungen (Online). Magnum Fotos ist auch sehr gut. Da findet mann die besten Fotografen der Welt.
Welches war die letzte Ausstellung, die du besucht hast.
Last one would have been to the National Portrait Gallery, in Canberra, Australia or Earl Parker’s one night exhibition of his street photography in Los Angeles. Earl Parker was one of the original writer / photographers for obscure 90’s LA skateboarding magazine, Big Brother. (Those guys went on to do Jackass)
Die letzte Ausstellung die ich besucht habe war die National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australien. Davor war ich auf Earl Parker’s “one-night street photography” Exhibition in Los Angeles. Earl Parker war eines der ersten Mitglieder der 90er LA Skateboard Magazin, Big Brother. (Die Jungs haben nachdem Jackass gemacht)
Wo gab es deine Arbeiten schon zu sehen?
Some of my work has been featured online through Lensculture, at the LA Cinefest (award winner), and also through the National Portrait Gallery, Australia.

Hebst du alle Bilder noch im RAW Format auf, oder findest du das im Internetzeitalter unnötig?
Absolutely. I shoot everything, and keep everything in RAW format. Who knows when you might want to go back later and change something in the colouring or in photoshop.
Absolut! Ich fotografiere und speichere alles in RAW. Mann weiss nie ob man später nicht einmal auf die älteren Fotos zurück greifen moechte.
Kannst du dir vorstellen, dass deine Bilder in einer Galerie nicht mehr als Print, sondern nur noch auf Screens erscheinen?
That is the way we are headed. Most of my work is exhibited online already, through my website mattcerwen.com. But there is nothing like seeing a print of one of your photos, touching the paper it is printed on and lighting it beautifully in a gallery. Sometimes, with technology, I think we are heading in the wrong direction. It’s all becoming too complicated in some aspects.
Das ist der Weg der Zukunft. Die meisten Fotos von mir sind sowieso nur auf meiner Website – mattcerwen.com – zu sehen. Aber es ist nicht das selbe wie ein Foto auf Papier, das man auch anfassen kann. Ich glaube Technologie geht manchmal auch in die falsche Richtung. Es wird zu kompliziert.
Benutzt du noch analoge Kameras und wenn ja warum?
For my photography I only use digital now. But I do still muck about with a really cool Super 8 film camera I have – A Nizo Pro 801 (with Kodak Ektachrome 100D rolls I still had lying around from film school) You never know what you are going to get with expired film.
Nein, für meine Fotos benutze ich nur noch Digitale Kameras. Aber ich spiele immer noch gerne mit meiner alte Super 8 Filmkamera. Einer Nizo Pro 801, mit Kodak Ektachrome 100D Film, die ich noch von meiner Studienzeit besitze. Mann weiß nie was kommt.
